There’s nothing more annoying than waking up to what looks like a bird’s nest of a hair. Whether curly or straight, hair frizz doesn’t seem to discriminate. While it does happen to straight-haired ladies, individuals with curly tresses are more susceptible to frizz because moisture can’t travel properly towards the hair shaft, thereby worsening dryness and dehydration.

Thankfully, there are many home and salon-based remedies to tame your frizzy hair. And, before diving into these de-frizzing techniques, it’s important to understand why this common hair issue occurs.

Why Does Frizzy Hair Happen?

Frizzy hair happens when your hair cuticle opens up, facilitating moisture from the environment to pass through the strands, forcing it to swell and, thereby, creating frizz.

The hair cuticle is the outermost portion of your hair strand, and it can get damaged through too much heat, absence of moisture, and chemical treatment.

To prevent these from happening, it’s critical to keep your hair cuticles intact and smooth through proper hair care. If you’ve got curly hair, better read the discussion below.

1. Get Rid Of Alcohol-Based And Synthetic Products

Apart from the environmental damage, hair products made from unnatural sources are the main culprits of hair frizz. For instance, strong chemicals from alcohol-based products damage your cuticles. Sulfate-packed shampoos tend to strip your hair away of natural oils, while silicone does the same. Use organic products while exploring hairstyles for curly hair to get rid of your frizz worries.

Throw away hair products with these synthetic materials and look for items with natural ingredients. You’ll not only save the environment, but look your best while doing it, too.

2. Always Use Conditioner

Hair conditioners provide basic moisturization for the hair. Thus, you shouldn’t fail to apply these types of hair products on your tresses. If you don’t take heed of this basic rule, you’ll soon find your hair extremely dry and frizzy.

There are many natural and moisturizing ingredients available on the market these days. Foremost to these products are those with shea butter, coconut oil, argan oil, and glycerin.

3. Use D-I-Y Masks

Otherwise, create your own all-natural hair masks straight from your kitchen. You can mix kitchen staples, such as egg, honey, and mayonnaise, for starters. If you don’t want any weird smell, mix banana and almond oil. Or, avocado, coconut oil, and olive oil may just be what you need to achieve enviable locks.

If you can’t live without using hair gel, consider getting pure aloe vera gel to apply to your hairdo. Achieve bouncy curls with mousse and keep full control of your hair. Make sure to read the label that says it’s alcohol-free.

4. Trim Your Hair Regularly

Damaged, dry, and dehydrated hair all make frizz even worse. And, it doesn’t help that split ends are typically the predecessors to hair frizz. That’s why you have to cut it off as soon as you notice a few strands affected by it.

Even better, consider going to your favorite hair salon every three months for a cut. This helps you maintain a healthy name. For curly hair, make sure to seal moisture a few days before your salon schedule.

5. Use Frizz-Resisting Tools

If you want to prevent frizzy hair, air drying is the best way to go. Experts recommend to reduce heat when dealing with uncontrollably messy hair as heat can worsen hair dryness and damage.

While science has yet to issue a verdict about its efficacy, some users swear by the ionic technology embedded in hair straighteners and blow dryers. Products using this technology claim to seal hair cuticles, keeping it smooth and protected from damage.

Persons with coiled tresses can use a detangling comb or smoothing brush to prevent breakage, making your hair more prone to split ends and opening doors to frizziness.

6. Moisturize Like Crazy

The key to keeping hair cuticles intact and smooth is to moisturize and seal it in. Having a special hair moisturizing treatment at home or in the salon helps you achieve frizz-free hair.

Look for natural hair products infused with ingredients, such as keratin, pure jojoba, olive oil, and pomegranate seed oil. These types of natural oils closely resemble the oils produced by your scalp, making them the top choice for individuals with wavy and curly locks. In addition, they don’t weigh your hair down and won’t affect your hair texture.

7. Switch To Silk Pillowcases

Silk is said to help reduce wrinkles, and, apparently, it can help keep hair moisture, too. Unlike cotton, silk doesn’t absorb moisture from your locks, helping you seal in much-needed moisture. If you don’t have a silk pillowcase, use a silk scarf to wrap your hair, and wake up with smooth and tamed curly locks.

Final Thoughts

It can be challenging to get rid of frizzy, dry, and damaged locks, but you can effectively combat frizz by hydrating your tresses.

Make sure to use tools that help seal in moisture, and keep your hair healthy by taking the right steps and choosing the right hair products.
